AN application for a new free school in Barnstaple has been submitted to the Department for Education.
Newport Primary headteacher Andy Cotton confirmed the school had now applied to set up a new free school in the west of the town.
The Journal reported on February 16 that Newport Primary and Team Multi-Academy Trust – which includes Pilton Bluecoat CofE Junior School, Brayford Primary School and Umberleigh Primary School – would be submitting bids for new schools.

AN investigation has been launched after a car was set ablaze on the banks of a North Devon reservoir.
Fire crews from Hartland were called to Melbury reservoir near Parkham after receiving reports of a vehicle fire at 9.08pm.
At the scene they discovered the vehicle was "well alight" and worked to extinguish the blaze – which has destroyed the car.
The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate and an investigation has been launched.

A CYCLIST was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured shoulder after a crash with a car in Bideford earlier today.
Police were called just before 12pm to the A386 Kingsley Road.
A cyclist and a blue Toyota Auris had collided.
An ambulance was called to treat the cyclist who suffered a shoulder injury, scrapes and bruises and shock.
He was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured shoulder.
